Physical and Health Education (PHE) Department at Graded

PHE Mission Statement

The Physical & Health Education (PHE) Programme makes a significant and unique contribution to our international community of learners by delivering curriculum that fosters the physical, social and emotional growth of the whole-child. It encourages students to develop the Graded Core Values by providing opportunities that promote physical and health literacy. A physical and health educated student will:

  • acquire skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities;
  • understand, experience and appreciate the health benefits that result from physical activity;
  • interact positively and collaboratively with others;
  • make responsible decisions that lead to an active and healthy way of life

Equipment and Appropriate Attire

  • Students must wear appropriate clothes for physical activities such as, T-shirt, tennis shoes and socks, shorts or sweat pants/track suits. JEANS, CARGOS, CROCKS and HAVAIANAS are not allowed. Anyone without appropriate clothes will receive a “not dressed” for class, and can not participate. In addition, students can be asked by the teacher to complete a written report provided by the teacher.
  • All equipment must be returned to the appropriate place. If the equipment is damaged, please inform the teacher.
  • Students will not be allowed to borrow P.E. equipment during recess, unless there is teacher supervision.
  • Individual baskets in the changeroom, will be allocated to students for storage of clothing and valuables.
  • The school is not responsible for the loss or damage of any valuables left outside of the locked area in the dressing room.

Student Behavior in the PHE Facilities

  • Students are responsible for appropriate behavior and maintenance of the locker room.
  • Any student who does not participate in P.E. on a particular day can not practice/play for JV or Varsity sports on that day.
  • No food or drink is allowed in the physical education facilities. If necessary, students who violate that rule may be forbidden to use the facilities.
  • Students should wait in the gym corridor after class until they are dismissed.  
  • Cell phones are not to be used during PE class, unless the the teacher requests the use of phones.  Phones are to be stored in your locker or storage baskets in the locker room.


Attendance and Tardiness

  • Students are only excused from class, provided that they bring a note from a parent/guardian or medical personnel.  The note should be brought to the teacher on the day the student is unable to participate. If a student does not provide a note, they must call a parent, in order for the parent to send an email to the PE teacher.  In addition, the student can be asked to submit an alternative assessment provided by the teacher.
  • Students unable to participate for more than 3 classes should provide a medical note from a doctor. Students will be required to submit an alternative summative assessment. The format of this assessment will depend upon the amount of class time that will be missed.  The assessment will be determined by the PHE department.  

PE Units and Assessment

PE units, will comprise of the following:

  • Invasion Activities
  • Net and Wall Activities
  • Strike and Field Activities
  • Target Activities
  • Developmental and Fundamental Movement
  • Fitness and Recreation Activities

PHE Descriptors of Achievement and Grades outline the criteria for grading and reporting in PHE.

  1. I agree with the dressing system. Beacause if you are not using proper clothing it is most likely you will get hurt; for example if you are using crocs then you may slip and fall when running.
