Exploring Physical and Health Literacy

Unit 1: Activity Exploration

Oi Gente!

The purpose of our first unit in PE is to explore different activities - Invasion, Net and Wall, Strike and Field, Target, Movement Fundamentals and Fitness and Recreation - as they relate to physical fitness and health.

Taking risks and being open-minded are fundamental so that an understanding of the skills and concepts necessary to participate successfully in these activities is developed.

Each class will participate in different learning experiences that will help develop a greater understanding of the following enduring understanding and essential questions:

Enduring Understanding
  • Active participation in various types of physical activity develops the understanding and appreciation of the skills and concepts needed to be physical and health literate throughout one's life

Essential Questions
  • What is physical and health literacy?
  • How does risk-taking and open-mindedness contribute to individual and/or group growth in various physical activities?
  • What decisions and actions impact the success of an individual and/or group in different physical activities?
  • How does an individual's understanding of physical and health literacy help develop lifelong physical fitness and health?

Grade 6 participates in team building activities

Expectations and Assessment

Read through the revised PHE Guidelines and Descriptors of Achievement and Grades and consider the following:
  • What is something new you have learned about the Physical and Health Education program?
  • What are some questions you may have about what is expected from your participation in PE?
  • How could our enduring understanding and essential questions for our first unit relate to our new PE curriculum?
  • In what ways do our PE norms connect to the PHE Guidelines and Descriptors of Achievement and Grades?

In the comment section below, share your answer to one of the questions regarding expectations and assessment in PE.

Remember, you have the power to choose how your development in PE and Health will look like over the course of each unit.

  1. What I have learned in P.E is that how you sprint, jog, run and etc affects your speed and achievement. I was able to use the strategy in P.E last time and I thought I was successful with the lesson you have taught me.

  2. What is something new you have learned about the Physical and Health Education program?:
One new thing I learned about the Physical Education program is that now the units are divided into activity categories and several sports van fit one category instead practicing only one sport per unit. This way, we have the opportunity to practice more than one sport in the unit. For example currently our unit is about invasion activities and so we are practicing ultimate Frisbee where you INVADE the other teams' side of the field and score a point by throwing the Frisbee over
the end of their division. However there are more invasion sports like football. So you can practice more than one sport per division which is great because we can learn more skills. Also, it gives us more opportunity to be open minded and try new things.

    1. Hi Ivanna, remember what is most important is your development over the course of the year. In order to improve your skills, you must participate. If you participate actively, then this effort that you demonstrate will be reflected in your personal and social behavior assessment, irrespective of the level of physical skill you demonstrate.

  4. What is something new you have learned about the Physical and Health Education program?
After reading and discussing in class about the new PE program, one new thing that I learned was about how now our units are divided into activity categories where several of sports and physical activities will be included. Basically, it's saying that we now have the opportunity to experience a lot of sports in a single year. In my opinion this is great for our PE program because before we would only do about 4 sports in a year and some classes we would do the same activity sometimes two times in two classes which made it be repetitive. An example of a unit which we are actually doing right now is INVASION activities where my class is practicing Track and Field. There are also many other invasion sports like soccer, ultimate frisbee... To end, this new upgrade will be a great opportunity for us to do different activities at once and hopefully will continue on.

  5. What is something new you have learned about the Physical and Health Education program? I have learned that it is very important to be active and participate, by trying my best to learn every sport and not goof off with friends. Also that active participation helps the understanding and appreciation of the skills needed throughout one's life.

I thought class only expect our skill for some sports, like how fast can I run, but in real class expect knowledge of sports and think what is the best way to play the game. Also, we have core values. Something that I learned about PHE is that there are loads of more important factors that just to move around. For example you have to be always attentive to your teacher and to your team mates. Other example of an important factor is that you really need to try your best. If you don`t you wont develop skills or improve them.

In my opinion, I have learned that the program has gradually changed over the years. For instance, this year in PE we are splitting instead of different units focusing on one sport, we are doing units such as invasion sports which include a variety of different activities for people to participate and be involved.

Instead of units like soccer, ultimate frisbee, and basketball, we will now have units like invasion games, Strike and field, Net and field, and Fitness and recreation. These units will include the sports we used to do, but will be categorised differently. For example, in soccer, you invade the opposing team's territory to score in their goal.

  13. What is something new you learned about the Physical and Health Education program?
Rather than setting the focal point of PE into the skills used in activities such as dribbling in basketball and soccer, it focuses more on the basic needs to play a multitude of sports such as fitness and recreation, target, net and wall, and much more. Not only that, but this evaluation motivates the student to become more of a risk taker and be open minded about learning so that they can participate more than they did last time.

  14. I think that our PHE norms connect several ways to the PHE guidelines and descriptors of achievement and grades. To start with a major part of our grade is in being inclusive, in other words is to work together in team and make sure everyone is giving their best because they are being included in the team. Being inclusive will make the team stronger because everyone will have their opportunity to play. Secondly, being curious in class is really good for you understanding because if you ask your questions to you teacher you can understand the unit or the work that you are doing better. Which leads us to responsive. It is very important for you to be responsible in class, not only being on time but also wearing the most appropriate clothing for the unit that you are working on. Lastly, you have to be a risk taker. Not only a risk taker to score a goal or to capture the flag but a risk taker to try new things, like things you have never tried before. If you use all these PHE norms correctly you will get a higher score that you expected. So give your best in this and in the following units.

  29. What is something new you have learned about the Physical and Health Education program?

Throughout my 2 years here in Graded, I have learned many things in PE. Among the most prominent of these things is the value of teamwork. I feel like the PE program really values and encourages teamwork. I think that they do a great job of encouraging it and demonstrating how important teamwork is. Throughout the course of last year, we had to use teamwork in many different circumstances, whether is be in a team building activity or football. This made us realize that teamwork really pays off. An example of this is the Costa Rica national team. Even though they don't necessarily have very skilled players, they somehow were able to beat Italy, Uruguay, and almost beat Holland. Why? Because they had great teamwork. I think we can all strive towards improving our teamwork, while looking at Costa Rica as an example.

  30. What is something new you have learned about the Physical and Health Education program?

While having Physical and Health Education, I learned that teamwork and helping others is the most important role. This is because in P.E, we mostly play games related to teamwork. However, to achieve a score, all players need to participate and play their roles, but there may be a person who is not very skilled. At this moment, only you being good at a particular activity doesn't help. We need to help others who has difficulties in the particular activity. This way, we can help others and increase our skills too.

  31. In what ways do our PE norms connect to the PHE Guidelines and Descriptors of Achievement and Grades?

Our PE norms are connected to the PHE Guidelines and Descriptors of Achievement and Grades because for me, our PE norms is what really creates the guidelines and grades. Let's say that being responsible was a PE norm(which it is). The description of an A, or in our case, 6 or 7, will include characteristics of someone who is responsible. A stellar student will be responsible in class. Not to mention the fact that inside our PHE Guidelines, it mentions wearing the proper apparel to PE. A student who excels in this will have made a habit to follow the PE norms, specifically for the core value "Responsible." Lastly though, as it states in our Guidelines, "Interact positively and collaboratively with others." A student who exhibits this would: help other students out, teach or explain the assignment/activity to a student who doesn't understand it, and enjoy themselves with all sorts of different cultures and races. There are a wide variety of others, but I just said the ones that came from the top of my head. These are PE norms, and the follow the guidelines. So there is, apparently, a large sense of interconnectedness within these things.

  35. In what ways do our PE norms connect to the PHE Guidelines and Descriptors of Achievement and Grades?

Well our norms help us learn in PE because for example if i'm not participating, I will not achieve. Our norms also help us determine on what to work on. For example, if I am not doing anything then that means that the teacher can't see your progress, then there is no way we can give you a grade that can help you improve. One last thing is that our norms help us communicate to others and have fun because if we don't follow them, then we won't learn and it will be no ones win.

Something new I have learned is that the sports are now divided into categories. We will have to clasify different sports in their categories according to what type of game it is. For example, Frisbee is invading because you have to invade into the other team's court, to be able to toss the frisbee to the other side. Something else I learned was that ALL the core values don't only apply to Humanities, Math, Science, etc., but also to P.H.E. I didn't know that ALL of the core values we learn in Humanities also apply to P.H.E when playing sports. I think the sports system is more efficent now because we get to try and do many different sports instead of only doing one per unit.

  69. How does an individual's understanding of physical and health literacy help develop lifelong physical fitness and health?

Well the better of an understanding that a person has of physical and health literacy the more educated they will be with their fitness and health. The individual would know how much exercise needs to be done each day and what foods to eat. They would understand the concept of a healthy diet and the earlier a person learns that. The more of an advantage they will have throughout all of their life. It would be easier to obtain the body they want and would help improve their self-esteem. It’s all just a matter of understanding how to maintain your health in a proper state and make sure you’re physically and mentally healthy.

  70. What is something new you have learned about the Physical and Health Education program?
I learned that we will receive three grades for PE, and this is new to me because I have never received multiple grades for this subject. To be honest I prefer the grading system before (the averaging one) because my strengths could cover my weaknesses.

    1. Hi Hyejune, you will still receive one grade for PE; however, applying the learning habits consistently within the PE setting will influence your overall achievement. As a PHE department, our intention is to be as transparent as possible. Therefore, creating rubrics and checklists to help inform your progress is of the utmost importance! This is a new process for all of us, so patience will be needed! The only difference in terms of your grade, is that you will receive one grade for Health (when it is your rotation) and one grade for PE.

  72. What is something new you have learned about the Physical and Health Education program?

I really like the new system of PE. It helps with team building and learning new sports we have not done before. For example invasion is like capture the flag and soccer. When we do many of these sports it always helps us with new different skills. Like not giving up, which is essential when you are playing sports, because if you want to give up all the time you can not win the game. Also teamwork is huge because if you do not have teamwork you cant not play the game right

Something that I've learned about the PHE program is that self respect, personal behavior and participation have a huge impact in your final score. self respect to you and others is one of the essential things in PHE because it wont keep you hanging behind when you know you can do it. Personal behavior is obviously important because during class you cant interrupt or hurt anyone. Participation is important because it a huge part of your grade and you need to try to see were you at to keep improving...
